Every year Independence Day is celebrated in India on 15th August in all states and union territories across the country, it marks the day India got freedom from the British Colonial rule in 1947, it was the day when the Indian Independence act was passed and British passed the Legislative Sovereignty to the Indian Constituent Assembly

For the first time Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru hoisted the Indian National flag at Red fort, Delhi in 1947 on 15th August 

CELEBRATIONS

15th August is declared National Holiday, its celebrated all over the country by hoisting tricolor flag, Singing National Anthems, showing prided in being Indian by organising various Cultural programmes in Schools, Colleges, Public Places to incite Patriotic feelings and develop Nation first attitude, Amid COVID 19 Pandemic across the country  this year Independence day is celebrated on Saturday (15th August 2020), the Central Government has given directions to celebrate in Schools, Officers, Public Places but taking into consideration all the Safety Measures according to Standard procedure of Wearing Face Masks at Public gatherings and keep social distance, however it has given instructions that in Schools No student be involved  for the celebrations as Coronavirus cases across country are on the rise,

At Red Fort the Prime minster will participate in Flag raising ceremony and then parade is ensued by Armed forces, Paramilitary Forces, Prime Minster Narendra Modi addressed to the nation will be telecast live in Doordarshan and other channels, Prime Minister in his speech outlines the achievements of previous years and future challenges with goals, he pay tributes to sacrifices of Indian Freedom fighters,  the Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said that PM Modi on 15th August from Red Fort may announce a strategy for Self Reliant India as recently Prime Minister announced AatmaNirbhar Bharath and gave the call for Vocal for Locals , Similarly the Chief Ministers of states unfurl the National Flag in State Headquarters  followed by Parades and Pageants

Awards are honoured to Armed Forces, Police, Fire Personnel, Home Guard rendering their service to the nation by honour them with Union Minister medal for Excellence in investigation, Presidents Medal for Disintinguished service, Police Medal for Meritorious service, Correctional Service Medal, Fire Service Medals, Home Guard and Defence service Medals, Presidents Police Medal for Gallantry,

HISTORY

East India company came to India in 16th Century through the sea route founded by Portuguese Sailor Vasco da Gama in 1498 with purpose of Spice trade, they Established their trading centers at Madras, Bombay and Calcutta, Before them Portuguese, Dutch, French had started trade but Britishers ended their trade in India by defeating them, even the decline of Mughal Rule in India in 18th Century paved the way for British to establish firm hold, By defeating Siraj ud Doula the Nawab of Bengal in Battle of Plassey that was led by Robert Clive Britishers started to play a prominent role in Indian affairs, by the 19th Century they had hold over most regions of India with their policy of Divide and Rule, Most parts of India were ruled directly by British or through the treaties with local rulers

FREEDOM MOVEMENTS

The period from 1612 to 1947 had various activities that were taken up to end the British colonial rule in India, Some of the Notable Freedom Movements occurred after revolt of 1857 which is considered as First war of Indian Independence

  • Indian National Congress (INC)was founded in 1885 at the premises of Gokuldas Tejpal Sanskrit School at Bombay.
  • Agah Khan III and Moshin Mulk founded Muslim league in 1906
  • In 1913 Lala Hardayal Started Ghadar Movement
  • Home Rule Movement was stated in 1916 with its headquarters at Poona
  • Mahatma Gandhiji returned to India from South Africa on 9th January 1915 at the age of 46 and in 1916 founded Sabarmathi Ashram to preach idealogy of truth and Non violence, he took part in Champaran Satyagraha, Kedaaar satyagraha, Ahamedabad Mill Strike
  • Satyagraha Sabha in 1919 founded by Mahatma Gandhi
  • Jallianwala Bagh Masacre in Amritsar on 13th April 1919, where people has gathered for protest against arrest of Saifuddin Kitchlew and Satyapal, but Britishers opened fire and killed many protestors
  • Non Cooperation Movement started on 1st August 1920 by Khilafat Committee
  • Formation of H.R.A (Hindustan Republican Association) at Kanpur
  • British Conservative Government under Stanley Baldwin appointed Simon Commission in 1927
  • 1928 framed Nehru Report for dominion status
  • On 31st March 1929, Jinnah announced 14 point programme
  • Lahore Session of Indian National Congress presided by Jawaharlal Nehru, resolution of Poorna Swaraj was passed
  • Dandhi March Led by Mahatma Gandhi with his 78 followers From 12th March to 6th  April 1930 to protest against the salt law,
  • 1st Round Table conference on 12th November 1930
  • on 5th March 1931 Gandhi Irwin pact was signed
  • 2nd Round Table Conference in 1931 attended by Mahatma Gandhi
  • Communal or Ramsay Macdonald Award was announced on 16th August in 1932
  • Sign of Poona Pact in 1932
  • 1932 the 3rd Round Table Conference was held
  • In year 1935 the Government of India Act was passed 
  • To get the support of Indians in the Second World War the then Viceroy Lord Linlithgow announced August offer in 1940
  • In 1942 Quit India Movement was started by Mahatma Gandhi, he gave the call Do or Die
  • Lord Wavell proposed Wavell Plan or Shimla Conference in 1945
  • Clement Attlee announced Cabinet Mission Plan in 1946
  • Interim Government was set up under Jawaharlal Nehru on 2nd September 1946
  • Independence of India Act was Passed in 1947, India was declared Independent Country

NATIONAL FLAG

On 22nd July 1947 the Indian Constituent Assembly accepted the design of the National Flag of India which is a horizontal tricolour in equal proportion with saffron (kesaria) at the top, white in the middle and Green at the bottom. Ratio of Width to Length of National Flag is two to three the navy blue wheel which represents the chakra with 24 Spokes is in the centre of White in the middle

  • White represent : Peace and Truth
  • Green represent : Fertility and Growth

FREEDOM FIGHTERS

There is vast list of Freedom fighters who have fought against the British colonial rule to get India free, among them some of the notables are Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhai Patel, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Rani Lakshmibhai, Mangal Pandey, Chandrashekar Azad, Bhagath Singh, Subhas Chandra Bose, Tantia Tope, Nana Sahib, Begum Hazrath Mahal, Lal Bahadur Shahstri, Sukdev, Bal Gangadar Tilak, Ashfaqualla Khan, Lala Lajpath Rai, C Rajagopala Chari, Abul Kalam, Dada Bai Navroji, K M Munshi, Bipin Chandra Pal, Abdul Hafiz Muhammad Barkatulla and others.

NATIONAL ANTHEM

The National Antthem Jana Gana Mana was composed by Rabndranath Tagoreis in Bengali, it takes approximately 52 seconds to sung, at Calcutta on 27th December 1927 it was sung publicly for the first time, it was accepted officially on 24th January 1950

It’s very important that pride of Nation should be inculcate within self to salute the sacrifices our ancestors have done to make our country Independent from Colonial rule, now it’s time that we march ahead to make our country self reliant and much more advanced in all fields, Jai Hind
